Removing Old Mercury Fillings

Posted .

The field of dentistry has made incredible improvements over the years. Dentists are now able to provide more comfortable, holistic care for a wider range of issues than ever before. At Crosby Dental Center, we specialize in metal-free biological dentistry, aiming to heal you more naturally. We can even remove old restorations that employ metal, including mercury.

Mercury, combined with other metals, has been used in amalgam fillings for decades. Notwithstanding its long history, it is still not without controversy in the dental community. Some say that it is completely safe for use in restorations, while others are not so sure. Its safe removal is also a topic of discussion. But by taking proper precautions, Drs. Jim Nored & Annette Gemp can safely remove mercury-containing fillings.

The main safety concern while removing a mercury filling is the release of mercury vapor. In order to keep the patient free from exposure to the mercury while it is removed, we use several strategies. For example, keeping the filling cool while drilling dramatically reduces mercury vapor. We also use a suction system to capture the vapor. By drilling the filling into chunks that can be removed by a hand instrument, less vapor is also released.

As each patient and situation is different, there is no hard and fast rule about mercury filling removal. It is necessary to have a personal consultation with our dentists in order to determine the best course of action. But replacing your old mercury filling with a new metal-free one can not only improve your appearance, but also your health.
